Hornby Island, BC - An Artists Mecca
For whatever reason, Hornby Island attracts artists. It might be the awe inspiring natural surroundings, it might be the solitude that a relatively remote island brings, or maybe the existing artist base draws them in. The reasons may never be known but the artists are here, and how! The artist run Island Gallery hosts over 50 artists, which is just a fraction of all the artists on the island.
There is something special about being on an island and most everyone who comes here agrees Hornby Island is special even among islands. There is a palatable energy to the place that calls to everyone's creativity. Some may only express it dancing in the orchard at the bakery to the rhythms of one of the local bands but others are drawn right in to live there and express the energy in their work.
The Hornby Island community hall, itself a wonderful expression of islanders' creativity, hosts local artists shows back-to-back all summer long. Even the local co-op food store constantly has an art show hanging on the back wall for all to check out while checking out their groceries!
Art is so prevalent on the island that there is not just the artist run gallery that I mentioned earlier but also the Hornby Island Arts Council that supports local artists and provides a showcase for their work.
In the winter the winds rage off the Straight of Georgia blowing in driftwood and stirring up everyone on the island. Artists hunker down in their studios transforming this into creativity. The results are amazing. From painting, to weaving, to sculpture, and pottery it seems as though most mediums find a master to work their magic. The winter is a great time to come and see the artists at work in their studio. You're likely to get a much more intimate interaction with them compared to the summer when you'll be competing with hoards of tourists for their time.
So if you are an art lover looking for unique art inspired by awesome nature, know that Hornby Island, especially in the off season, is unique in its artistic diversity and quality.
